Among the Ahens group "Shakedowm Street" is the song most likely to be referenced. Talmadge St/ kind of got nicknamed
Shakedown Street because of Jeff. You'd hear it blasting from his and KaRon's place an find him on the futon bouncing his
head about, then without you noticing he'd be standing up arms flowing , body moving shaking on shake down street with the
biggest smile you have ever seen. It was like his morning coffee...a shot of shakedown and and he was ready to go!
You tell me this town aint got no heart. well, well, well, you can never tell.
The sunny side of the street is dark. well, well, well, you can never tell.
Maybe thats cause its midnight, in the dark of the moon besides.
Maybe the dark is from your eyes, maybe the dark is from your eyes,
Maybe the dark is from your eyes, maybe the dark is from your eyes,
Maybe the dark is from your eyes, maybe the dark is from your eyes,
You know you got such dark eyes!
Nothin; shakin; on shakedown street. used to be the heart of town.
Dont tell me this town aint got no heart. you just gotta poke around.
You think you&ve seen this town clear through.
Well, well, well, you can never tell.
Nothin here that could intest you. well, well, well, you can never tell.
Its not because you missed out on the thing that we had to start.
Maybe you had too much too fast. maybe you had too much too fast.
Maybe you had too much too fast. maybe you had too much too fast.
Maybe you had too much too fast. maybe you had too much too fast.
Or just over played your part.
Nothin shakin on shakedown street. used to be the heart of town.
Dont tell me this town aint got no heart. you just gotta poke around.
Since I passing your way today. well, well, well, you can never tell.
I just stopped in; cause I want to say, well, well, well, you can never tell.
I recall your darkness when it crackled like a thundercloud.
Dont tell me this town aint got no heart.
Dont tell me this town aint got no heart.
when I can hear it beat out loud!
Nothin shakin; on shakedown street. used to be the heart of town.
Dont tell me this town aint got no heart. you just gotta poke around.
Jennifer and I were talking just shortly after Jeff had left us. I actually think I was telling her what had happened
when she said "I can never listen to Groove Is In The Heart" again without tearing up. She went on to explain how
she could see him clear as a bell shaking it all over the place and belting out the lyrics to groove is in the heart at the
apartment on talmadge and every party we went to for a while. Deee-Lite's Grove is in the heart was Jeff's "travel with
me" party favor for weeks!
Deee-Lite
Groove Is In The Heart
You're going to dance
You're going to dance
You're going to dance
And have some fun
Dig
The chills that you spill up my back
keep me filled with satisfaction when we're done
satisfaction of what's to come
I couldn't ask for another
No, I couldn't ask for another
Another try
Your groove, I do deeply dig
No walls, only the bridge, my supperdish
My succotash wish
Singing, babyI couldn't ask for another
No, I couldn't ask for another
Groove is in the heart, Groove is in the heart
Groove is in the heart, Groove is in the heart
Watch out!The depth of hula groove
Move us to the nth hoop
We're going thru to, Horten hears a who
I couldn't ask for another
No, I couldn't ask for another
DJ Soul was on a roll
I been told he can't be sold
Not vicious or malicious
Just de-lovely and delicious
I couldn't ask for another
No, I couldn't ask for another
Groove is in the heart...
There was a time when everyone it seems fought KaRon on her decision to be with Jeff. He mother, her brother, some of her
friends, her boss, and sometimes even Jeff's brother could give her a million reasons why it could never work. Jennifer used
to always play this song to let her know that whatever she decided it would be okay. Jeff and KaRon came to love the song
as much as they loved snubbing their noses to anyone who tried to come between them...
Misguided Angel...Cowboy Junkies
I said; mama, hes crazy and he scares me
But I want him by my side
Though hes wild and hes bad
And sometimes just plain mad
I need him to keep me satisfied;
I said papa, dont cry cause its alright
And I see you in some of his ways
Though he might not give me the life that you wanted
Ill love him the rest of my days
Misguided angel hangin over me
Heart like a gabriel, pure and white as ivory
Soul like a lucifer, black and cold like a piece of lead
Misguided angel, love you til Im dead
I said brother, you speak to me of passion
You said never to settle for nothing less
Well, its in the way he walks,
Its in the way he talks
His smile, his anger and his kisses
I said sister, dont you understand?
Hes all I ever wanted in a man
Im tired of sittin around the t.v. every night
Hoping Im finding a mr. right
Misguided angel hangin over me
Heart like a gabriel, pure and white as ivory
Soul like a lucifer
Black and cold like a piece of lead
Misguided angel, love you til Im dead
He says baby, dont listen to what they say
There comes a time when you have to break away
He says baby there are things we all cling to all our life
Its time to let them go and become my wife
Misguided angel hangin over me
Heart like a gabriel, pure and white as ivory
Soul like a lucifer
Black and cold like a piece of lead
Misguided angel, love you til Im dead
Space Wrangler was a part of everyday life with Jeff in the early to mid 90's. He loved this song especially for the
reference to "They smell like ladies lying in the sun". It was about the time when we all started frequenting and
working at "The Pelican" on Folly Beach when this phrase gained more meaning. After one of us ordered a Malibu
Coconut Rum with Pinapple Juice, Jeff was astounded and proclaimed it "THE DRINK that smelled like ladies lying in the
sun" and ordered it often no matter what tavern we may be in and usually sang the entire song while sipping his drink.
Coconut Lyrics
Artist: Widespread Panic
Album: Space Wrangler
I like coconuts
You can break them open
They smell like ladies lying in the sun
I like coconuts
You can break them open
They smell like ladies lying in the sun
And if I had my way
I'd give a coconut to everyone
I got a friend named Jack
Look like a bone in a paper sack
That's my friend Jack
C'mon Jack, smell these coconuts
There's enough for everyone
Jackie likes the smell of cut grass
He used to play ball on Saturdays
Playing in the sun
Jackie likes the smell of cut grass
He used to play ball on Saturdays
Playing in the sun
If Jackie had his way
He'd give some cut grass to everyone.
It's time to play
Never tasted such a sweet thing
Yesterdays
Sweet memories my heart's repeating
Time today
Everybody's heart is beating
Everybody's smile is greeting
Everybody's soul is heating (eating?)
I know a guy named Fred
Look like a bone in a slanted shed
That's my friend Fred
C'mon Fred, smell these coconuts
There's enough for everyone
Freddy likes the sound of cold drink
He used to pop tops on Saturday
Sipping in the sun
Freddy likes the sound of cold drink
He used to pop tops on Saturday
He was sipping in the sun
And if Freddy had his way
He'd give a cold drink to everyone
Gonna follow my nose to where the coconut grows
Nobody knows like I know my nose knows
Gonna follow my nose to where the coconut grows
Nobody knows like I know my nose knows
Gonna follow my nose to where the coconut grows
Nobody knows like I know my nose knows
Gonna follow my nose to where the coconut grows
Nobody knows like I know my nose knows
I like coconuts
You can break them open
And they smell like ladies lying in the sun
Another Favorite of Jeff's off Space Wranger was Chilly Wet Water. I think he made Tim listen to it about 45 hundred
times so that he could get just how cool the song was and how it kind of went along with Folly Beach life making the cross
over to Charleston every day.
Chilly Water Lyrics
Artist: Widespread Panic
Album: Space Wrangler
In the easy chair with my boots on
Melted whiskey in my hand
I couldn't have been asleep for more than three hours
Time to go to work again
Once more I beat the sunrise
And there's a dark breeze at my door
Raise the water from the well up to my face
How could a man like me be poor?
As long as there's water
Chilly wet water
Gimme some of that cool water
Well, my horse's eyes are glassy
He breathed the city in his lungs last night
I lead his natural body
To the trough to regain his might
Red rooster crow them blues here
That Old Blue he round the bull
And the mornin's crying rays of sunrise
It hasn't rained for three weeks full
As long as there's water
Chilly well water
Gimme some of that cool, cool water
Venus light is rising
I lay my buckets inside the shed
And there's a man I see - a stranger
Leaning on the gate outside my fence
Said "I'm riding out from the city
Where they started holding water back last night
I was hoping I could get a drink from your well
Before I ride on to another city tonight"
Before I ride on to another city tonight
Before I ride on to another city tonight
Chilly well, chilly well water
Cool well, chilly well water
Before I ride on
This song always reminds Jennifer of when KaRon and Jeff were struggling to keep it together. Jennifer, Shamim, Tim, and
Stephanie can also tell the sad story of "life happening to the mad love"...one day something changed. KaRon was
going in her career direction and Jeff was going where the wind took him. They spent more and more time apart where it almost
became separate lives. Then there was fighting, trust issues, and pain that hadn't been there before. They both struggled
but it was KaRon who eventually had to say that this cannot work. On a lighter happier note the two re-formed a friendship
and kept it alive until the end...

Better Man
Waiting, watching the clock. It's four o'clock.
It's got to stop. Tell him. Take no more.
She practices her speech as he opens the door,
she rolls over.
Pretends to sleep as he looks her over.
She lies and says she's in love with him. Can't find a better man.
She dreams in color, she dreams in red. Can't find a better man.
Can't find a better man. (x2)Ohh...Talking to herself, "There's no one else who needs to know, she tells herself.
Oh...Memories back when she was bold and strong and waiting for the world to come along.
Swears she knew him now she swears he's gone.
She lies and says she's in love with him. Can't find a better man.
She dreams in color, she dreams in red. Can't find a better man.
She lies and says she still loves him. Can't find a better man.
She dreams in color, she dreams in red. Can't find a better man.
Can't find a better man. (x2)Yeah.
She loved him, yeah. She don't want to leave this way.
She feeds him, yeah. That's why she'll be back again.
Can't find a better man. (can't find a better man) (x3)Can't find a better man.Ohh... ohh...Uh huh... (x5)Ohh...
Tim introduced Jeff and KaRon to American Prayer without which one has not truly experienced Jim Morrison with or without
THE DOORS. American Prayer is hypnosis, beauty, horror, and light all at the same time. To Jeff a God came to life through
these words and for Tim and Jeff a new name came about for KaRon, Ornament!..."out here we are stoned immaculate."
Doors, The lyrics - American Prayer lyrics - An American Prayer/ Hour For Magic/ Freedom Exists/ A Feast Of Friends Exerpt
from the lyrics
Where is the wine
The new wine
(dying on the vine)
Resident mockery
Give us an hour for magic
We of the purple glove
We of the starling flight
& velvet hour
We of arabic pleasures's breed
We of sundome & the night
Give us a creed
To believe
A night of lust
Give us trust in
The night
Give of color
Hundred hues
A rich mandala
For me & for you
& for your silky
Pillowed house
A head, wisdom
& a bed
Troubled decree
Resident mockery
Has claimed thee
We used to believe
In the good old days
We still receive
In little ways
The things of kindness
& unsporting brow
Forget & allow
Did you know freedom exists
In school books
Did you know madmen are
Running our prisons
Within a jail, within a gaol
Within a white free protestant
Maelstrom
We're perched headlong
On the edge of boredom
We're reaching for death
On the end of a candle
We're trying for something
That's already found us
Wow, i'm sick of doubt
Live in the light of certain
South
Cruel bindings
The sevants have the power
Dog-men & their mean women
Pulling poor blankets over
Our sailors
I'm sick of dour faces
Starong at me from the t.v.
Tower, i want roses in
My garden bower; dig?
Royal babies, rubies
Must now replace aborted
Strangers in the mud
These mutants, blood-meal
For the plant that's plowed
They are waiting to take us into
The severed garden
Do you know how pale & wanton thrillful
Comes death on a stranger hour
Unannounced, unplanned for
Like a scaring over-friendly guest you've
Brought to bed
Death makes angels of us all
& gives us wings
Where we had shoulders
Smooth as raven's claws
No more money, no more fancy dress
This other kingdom seems by far the best
Until its other jaw reveals incest
& loose obedience to a vegetable law
I will not go
Prefer a feast of friends
To the giant family
Doors, The lyrics - American Prayer lyrics - Stoned Immaculate lyrics
I'll tell you this...
No eternal reward will forgive us now
For wasting the dawn.
Back in those days everything was simpler and more confused
One summer night, going to the pier
I ran into two young girls
The blonde one was called freedom
The dark one, enterprise
We talked and they told me this story
Now listen to this...
I'll tell you about texas radio and the big beat
Soft driven, slow and mad
Reaching your head with the cold, sudden fury of a divine messenger
Let me tell you about heartache and the loss of god
Wandering, wandering in hopless night
Out here in the perimeter there are no stars
Out here we is stoned
Immaculate.
Might As Well Dance
(This was written by an 83 year old...The last line says it all and makes me think of Jeff.)
"Dear Bertha,
I'm reading more and dusting less. I'm sitting in the yard and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the
garden. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time working.
Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experiences to savor, not to endure. I'm trying to recognize these moments
now and cherish them.
I'm not "saving" anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event such as losing a pound,
getting the sink unstopped, or the first Amaryllis blossom.
I wear my good blazer to the market My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of groceries.
I'm not saving my good perfume for special parties, but wearing it for clerks in the hardware store and tellers at the
bank. "Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their grip on my vocabulary; if it's worth seeing or
hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now.
I'm not sure what others would've done had they known they wouldn't be here for the tomorrow that we all take for granted.
To put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and lustre to our lives.
And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. Every day, every minute, every breath truly is
a gift from God.
"People say true friends must always hold hands, but true friends don't need to hold hands because they know the
other hand will always be there."
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance .. . .
Every now and again just let yourself go and Dance with Jeff...after all "life may not be the party we hoped for,
but while we are here we might as well dance....because we don't have to hold his hand to for him to always be in our hearts!
